Room Connections is an interactive, zoomable graph that shows how your study rooms relate to one another. Each node is a room you belong to. Each edge (line) between nodes is a connection you define β€” labelled with whatever relationship makes sense to you, like related research, reference, or spawned from.

Unlike a feed or a folder, a graph lets you see clusters, paths, and gaps in your knowledge work at a glance. The map is yours β€” no one else can see or edit your connections.

🌟 What makes this different

Study rooms are collaborative. The rooms on your graph were not all created by you β€” and not everyone in a room sees the same graph. Each member holds their own private set of connections, drawn from the rooms they belong to, labelled the way theythink about the relationships. The platform brings people together inside shared rooms while leaving each person's map of knowledge entirely their own.

Imagine a family using NotaeLibrary together. You create a room called Family Album as a shared archive and invite your partner, your adult children, and a sibling. Over time the family builds out a constellation of rooms β€” some created by you, some by others who then invited you in.

  • The same room β€” a completely different map.You and Emma are both members of Family Album and Emma's Wedding, but you see different graphs because you belong to different rooms and you chose different labels. Neither map is β€œcorrect” β€” they reflect how each person thinks about the knowledge.
  • Connections are private.Your connections are yours alone. Emma cannot see that you labelled her room β€œchapter of”, and you cannot see her β€œvendor” edge to Venue & Florists unless she invites you to that room too.
  • Shared rooms, personal intelligence. When Sage answers a question inside a shared room it traverses yourconnection graph β€” not Emma's, not a merged global graph. The collaborative knowledge inside each room is shared; the map that connects the rooms is not.

How to build this

  1. Create a hub room and invite family members
  2. Each person creates their own rooms and invites others as needed
  3. Open your Room Connections graph for the hub room
  4. Drag handles between nodes to create your personal connections
  5. Label each edge the way you think about the relationship

πŸ”­Reading the graph

  • Homeroom node β€” the room with a blue border and glow is your Homeroom. It is always the default centre of the graph and cannot be removed from the canvas.
  • Radial rings β€” rooms are arranged in concentric rings around the focal node. Rooms directly connected to the focal node sit on the first ring (~220 px out), second-degree rooms sit on the second ring (~420 px), and so on.
  • Edge labels β€” each connection displays its label on the line midpoint. Hover a label to read it without zooming.
  • Faded nodesβ€” a node that appears semi-transparent means you haven't visited that room recently (time-decay opacity). Rooms visited in the past 30 days are fully opaque; 30–90 days = 70%; 90–180 days = 40%; 180+ days = 20%. Pin a room to override this and keep it fully visible regardless of activity.
  • Disconnected roomsβ€” rooms you belong to that have no connections to the focal room yet are clustered at the right-hand periphery so they're always reachable.

🧭Navigating the graph

    Single-click to re-centre

    Click any node to make it the new focal room. The graph re-arranges radially around that room and a breadcrumb trail appears at the top of the canvas so you can trace your path back.

    Breadcrumb trail

    The breadcrumb bar shows every room you have clicked through in this session. Click any crumb to jump back to that focal point. Click the Homeroom name (the first crumb, always shown in indigo) to instantly reset the focal room to your Homeroom.

    Double-click to open the World graph

    Double-clicking a room node opens that room's World graphβ€” the entity/relation knowledge graph inside the room itself. A "← Back to Room Connections" link will appear there so you can return to this view.

    Pan & zoom

    Drag the canvas background to pan. Scroll to zoom. The zoom controls in the bottom-left corner also provide fit-to-view and lock-zoom buttons.

    Depth selector

    The Depth 1 / 2 / 3 buttons in the top-left toolbar control how many hops from the focal room are shown at once.
    • Depth 1 β€” only rooms directly connected to the focal node.
    • Depth 2 (default) β€” direct connections plus their connections.
    • Depth 3 β€” three hops out; good for seeing the full landscape.
    Your Homeroom is always shown regardless of the depth setting.

πŸ”—Creating a connection

Connections are directional β€” they go from one room to another β€” but the graph treats them as undirected when computing layout and depth, so the direction is purely a semantic hint for you.

    Hover a node to reveal handles

    Move your cursor over any room node. Small circular handle dots appear on the left and right edges of the card β€” these are the connection anchors.

    Drag from a handle to another node

    Click and drag from a handle. A line follows your cursor. Release on top of another room node to start creating a connection between those two rooms.
  3. 3

    Fill in the popover

    A small popover appears asking for:
    • Relation label (required) β€” a short phrase describing how the rooms relate, e.g. spawned from, reference material, contradicts, follow-up.
    • Personal note (optional) β€” a private note to yourself about why you made this connection. Only you can see it.
  4. 4

    Press Enter or click Create

    The connection is saved immediately and the edge appears on the canvas. Press Escape or click Cancel to abort without saving.

πŸ“ŒPinning rooms

If a room has faded due to inactivity but you want to keep it visually prominent, you can pin it. Pinned rooms always display at full opacity regardless of when you last visited.

  • A πŸ“Œ pin button appears on any node that is either already pinned or has started to fade (opacity below 100%).
  • Click the pin button on the node. The button turns amber when active. Click it again to unpin and restore time-decay behaviour.
  • Pinning is stored on the connectionbetween you and that room, not on the room itself β€” so your pin does not affect anyone else's view.

Your room graph is automatically passed to Sage (the AI assistant embedded in each room) as additional context. Sage doesn't just look inside the room you're in β€” it walks the connection graph outward, hop by hop, gathering knowledge from adjacent rooms before answering you.

Following the edge from Emma's Wedding labelled β€œshared guests”, Sage arrives at Summer Reunion 2022 via a second path. It now knows these two rooms share people β€” giving it the context to answer across both albums.

Without connections, Sage could only answer from Family Album alone and would miss everything in the chapter rooms.

  • In your Homeroom, Sage receives up to three hops of your graph β€” your full knowledge neighbourhood β€” labelled [Your Room Graph]. Ask things like "What do my travel rooms have in common?" or "Which albums mention the same people?"
  • In any other room, Sage receives up to two hops from that room β€” labelled [Adjacent Rooms]. This lets it reference nearby rooms without overwhelming the context window.
  • Edge labels are included in the context Sage receives, so it understands howrooms relate β€” not just that they do. A connection labelled β€œcontradicts” tells Sage something very different from one labelled β€œsupports”.
  • The graph context is injected at the lowest priority behind the room's own knowledge, so it never crowds out your primary content.

✨Tips & best practices

  • Label edges specifically.Labels like "related" become noise quickly. Prefer directional verbs: informed by, led to, contradicts findings in, background reading for.
  • Use depth 1 for focus. When you want to see only what matters right now, set depth to 1. It removes distracting second-degree rooms.
  • Navigate by clicking, not searching. Single-click a node to pivot the map around it. This is faster than looking up rooms in the sidebar when you know the topic neighbourhood you want to explore.
  • Pin sparingly. Reserve pins for rooms you actively return to weekly. Fading is a useful signal β€” if a room is always fully opaque, you lose the ambient reminder of which rooms need revisiting.
  • The graph persists your session. If you navigate away and come back, the map remembers your last focal room and breadcrumb trail for the duration of your browser session.
