A simple guide to how credits, library cards, and subscriptions work at NotaeLibrary.
NotaeLibrary is free to join. You get a library card that gives you access to everything you need to read, join study rooms, and participate in discussions.
AI-powered features β like chatting with Sage, generating Notaepedia articles, or extracting information from images β use credits. Think of credits like the change in your pocket for the vending machine. They cover the small cost of the AI services behind these features.

Everyone starts with a Readercard β it's free and always will be. It gives you full access to reading, study rooms, and the community. The Reader card is supported by advertising, like a public library supported by taxes.
Credits are how you pay for AI-powered features. Each feature tells you approximately how many credits it will use before you confirm β no surprises.

Perfect for trying out AI features
Auto top-up keeps your credits topped up automatically so you never run out mid-project. Anyone can use it β just add a payment method once, then set your thresholds and a monthly safety cap:
You'll get an email before any charge and a receipt after each top-up β no surprises. Every charge appears in your on-card history, and you can see how much you've spent toward your monthly cap.
π If your card is declined β auto top-up pauses and we ask you to update your payment method. It never silently retries a broken card.
π If you hit your monthly capβ auto top-up pauses and shows "resumes on the 1st." It restarts automatically next month.
βΈοΈ If the platform pauses auto top-upβ the card shows a note; your settings are kept and resume when it's re-enabled.
Configure it at Home Room β Settings β Billing & Credits

Do I need a credit card to use NotaeLibrary?
No. The Reader card is free and doesn't require any payment method. You get 50 free credits every month. If you want more credits or a paid plan, you'll need to add a payment method.
What happens when I run out of credits?
AI features will show a friendly nudge to add credits. Reading, posting, and browsing study rooms are never affected β those are always free.
Do my credits expire?
Purchased credits never expire. Free monthly credits reset each month. Subscription credits can roll over if your plan has rollover enabled.
How much does a typical AI chat cost?
A typical back-and-forth with Sage uses about 2β5 credits per exchange. Your 50 free monthly credits give you plenty of conversation. We always show you the estimated cost before any large operation.
Can I switch plans anytime?
Yes. Upgrade or downgrade anytime from your billing settings. Changes take effect at the start of your next billing period.
What's the difference between buying credits and subscribing?
Buying credits is pay-as-you-go β convenient but more expensive per credit. Subscribing gets you a bulk credit bundle every month at a much lower per-credit rate, plus premium features like ad-free reading and custom domains.
