Policies & Legal
AI Library Policy
Our policy on AI-generated and AI-assisted works in the NotaeLibrary catalog. Effective March 2026.
🏛️Our Position
NotaeLibrary is an open library. We do not censor or prohibit works based on the tools or methods used in their creation — including artificial intelligence. We believe authors have the right to use any tool available to them, and readers have the right to know what they are reading.
Our AI Library Policy is therefore built on a single core principle: transparency, not restriction. Works are welcome in the catalog regardless of how much AI was involved — provided the level of AI involvement is accurately disclosed.
📊Disclosure Tiers
Authors must select the appropriate disclosure tier when publishing. This label is displayed prominently on the work's catalog page and in the reader.
The work was created primarily by human intelligence. AI tools may have been used only for low-level assistance (grammar checks, spellcheck, basic structural suggestions). No disclosure label is required — the default catalog listing applies.
The work contains a meaningful portion of AI-generated content alongside substantial human direction, editing, and creative input. Must carry the "AI-Assisted" label in the catalog and at the start of the work.
The work was generated entirely by AI with the human acting as prompter, curator, or editor. Must carry a prominent "100% AI Generated" label on the catalog page, the cover, and the opening page of the work.
🛠️Helpful AI Tools — No Disclosure Required
We recognise that many modern writing tools incorporate AI features for everyday tasks. The following uses of AI are considered assistive and do not require disclosure, provided the human-originated creative content still represents 85% or more of the final work:
- ✓Grammar and spell checking (e.g. Grammarly, built-in word processor tools)
- ✓Autocomplete and basic sentence suggestions
- ✓Structural outlining and chapter organisation prompts
- ✓Factual research assistance (looking up dates, names, citations)
- ✓Translation or language polish where the author wrote the original
- ✓Cover image touchups and minor graphic enhancements
Rule of thumb: If a skilled human reader would recognise the voice, ideas, and creative decisions as yours, and AI merely helped you express them more clearly or efficiently, no disclosure is needed.
📋What Must Be Disclosed
The following uses of AI must be disclosed with the appropriate tier label:
- !Generating prose, dialogue, or narrative sections using an AI language model
- !Using AI to write full chapters or scenes, even if edited afterwards
- !AI-generated plot outlines where the AI determined story direction
- !AI-generated cover art, illustrations, or internal images
- !Using AI to translate and publish a work originally written in another language by AI
- !Any content where AI generated more than 15% of the final published text
⚖️Enforcement & Good Faith
NotaeLibrary operates on good faith disclosure. We do not employ automated AI-detection tools as gatekeepers — such tools are imperfect and we do not believe they are a fair or reliable basis for policy enforcement.
However, if a work is found to be materially mislabelled — for example, a 100% AI-generated work published without any disclosure — it may be relabelled or removed from the catalog following a review. Repeated or deliberate mislabelling may result in suspension of publishing privileges.
Readers who believe a work is mislabelled may report it using the flag option on the catalog page. All reports are reviewed by our moderation team.
🔄Policy Updates
The AI landscape is evolving rapidly. This policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect changes in technology, industry standards, and community feedback. Significant changes will be announced via the Bulletin Board. Questions or feedback about this policy? Contact us at hello@notaelibrary.com.
